Here was this old man riding a strange contraption that wanted to race the local hotshots around one-third-mile Charles River Park track. It was not until the race was built on the old one that came with something really incredible.

On that day-June 1, 1896-Roper has three laps, covering the distance in just over two minutes for an average speed of 30 mph. Then he tried to go even faster. After all, just a week before he had scored a mile off on Dorchester Avenue and completed with an average speed of 40 mph.

The Boston Daily Globe reported the tragic events that followed:

"The machine was cutting a lively pace on the back stretch when the men seated near the training quarters noticed the bicycle is unstable," said paper. "The forward wheel wobbled, and then suddenly, the cycle was deflected from its course e fuori pista immersa nella sabbia, gettando il pilota o di ribaltamento.

A proposito a further 10 steam-powered vehicles followed, culminating in this machine, now owned by Robert Boudeman of Richland, Michigan, and on display at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame museum.

In this final project, Roper's engine consists of a small coal-fired boiler in a home that was good for about 7 miles on each stirring. As the inventor liked to say: "It would climb any hill and outrun any horse."

Shooting Pain Through One Side Of Neck And Head

close look at this 1909 Royal Pioneer and you would think there should be four hands to ride it. Or maybe five.

After all, there are four distinct twistgrips on the handlebars, two on each side. In addition, there is a hand pump on the tank for the supply of oil to the engine.

But the Royal Pioneer, for one year from the Royal Motor Works in Worcester, Massachusetts, was not designed for contortionists, says Bruce Linsday owner of Cleveland.

In fact, he says, "It 's been a gentleman's touring bike, built for reliability and softness. "

's just that at the time, the familiar pattern we know for a motorcycle controls were not established. So the individual producers experimented with a variety of devices.

The Pioneer, for example, that large number of controls twistgrips four distinct functions. A regulates the supply of gasoline, while another regulates the amount of air reaching the engine, essentially, that allows you to change the carburetor projection while driving. twistgrip advances a third time ignition, and the fourth by a compression release.

Meanwhile, on the left side of the combination gas / oil reservoir, one can find a hand-operated, piston-style oil pump. From time to time while driving, it gives a little pump to keep the engine lubricated.

All in all, it had to take a pilot quite busy. But as for its unusual control stand, the Royal Pioneer has been notable for some interesting technology, too.

For example, on the overhead valve 600cc engine is set at 90 degrees to each cylinder. And that also means the inclusion of unusual pullrods which are operated by pushrods instead of the more familiar.

Even among real line of motorcycles, only Pioneer has pullrods, Linsday said. And he does not know why the company chose this approach.
